Chief John LaRoche was indicted last month after he was accused of forcing a teenage girl to perform sex acts on him more than a decade ago when he worked in Boscawen. He pleaded not guilty.
Selectmen Chairman Bob Steenson says the petition seeks to replace police with state or county law enforcement. Supporters need 25 signatures to put it up for a vote.
Proponents tell the Concord Monitor that the petition has gathered at least 70 signatures.
