Hearing begins for Medford police sergeant accused of hitting woman

Lee, a 16-year veteran of the force, was placed on paid administrative leave Sept. 28 after an altercation the day before with a woman he had previously dated, according to court records. Lee and the woman filed restraining orders against each other.

A Somerville District Court judge threw out Lee's request for an extended restraining order and upheld the woman's stay-away order for one year.

Stephanie Muccini Burke, who was recently appointed budget director and head of personnel by the mayor, presided as the hearing officer.

Howard Greenspan, a Lynnfield attorney, represented the city in the case. City Solicitor Mark Rumley recused himself because of close personal ties to the Lee family, he said.

Rumley was a longtime friend of Richard Lee, James Lee's brother and former budget director and head of city personnel, who died in December, and whose position was filled by Burke.
