Bank Robbery
CLIENT: Gerard 'Gerry' Clemente
ATTORNEY: Joe Oteri & Martin Weinberg
LOCATION: Medford, Mass
CASE SYNOPSIS: Over Memorial Day weekend in 1980 Gerry Clemente, Tommy Doherty, Brother O'Leary, Bucky Barrett, Kenny Holmes and Joe Bangs robbed the Depositors Trust bank in Medford of $1.5 million and millions more in safety deposits. Clemente and Doherty were cops. They almost got away with it as the statute of limitations (6 years) was approaching. However, things started getting complicated when in 1984 Tommy Doherty shot Joe Bangs, but he survived and began cooperating with the prosecution - as did Gerry Clemente's girlfriend, who was upset that Gerry would not leave his wife. Another problem was that the the Boston mafia had a lot of money and valuables in the safety deposit boxes and Bucky Barrett paid with his life years later when Whitey Bulger tortured and killed him to get Bucky's share of the heist. My investigation focused on a thorough investigation of Joe Bangs. They were all found guilty in March of 1985 and got 30 years in state prison.
Clemente wrote about the heist in the book The Cops Are Robbers: A Convicted Cop's True Story of Police Corruption. This case was also featured in the 1990 film Good Cops, Bad Cops.
