The City of Medford is currently accepting applications from Medford residents to serve on one of many City Boards & Commissions.
Residents who are interested in serving on any of the boards and commissions below should complete the Board and Commission Interest Form available at www.medfordma.org/boards. Completed forms should be submitted via email to, BoardsandCommissions@medford-ma.gov or mailed to the Office of the Mayor at 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Room 202, Medford, MA 02155.
Residents of all backgrounds and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation.
In addition to the boards and commissions below, residents are always encouraged to submit letters of interest for any board of commission listed on our website. Should vacancies become available on any city board or commission in the future, we will contact you for opportunities within your area of interest.
Arts Council (Cultural Council)
Multiple available positions
The Medford Arts Council serves to bring high-quality cultural programming to the community. Through our grant-making we increase public access to Medford’s many cultural assets and promote favorable conditions for our creative economy. On an annual cycle we offer grants to community members, artists, writers, performers, instructors, students, cultural organizations, and others seeking to engage the Medford public. We also help sponsor new public arts and humanities initiatives in Medford. For more information visit www.medfordartscouncil.org.
The Council normally meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6pm.
Board of Health

The Medford Board of Health’s mission is to improve, preserve and protect the health of the citizens of the City of Medford. The Board will advocate for a safe environment, for reduction of known health risks, and for application of known preventive health measures. The Board will affect its mission through the health agents and staff and in cooperation with other local, State, and Federal agencies and departments.
The Board normally meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 12:30pm.
Cable Advisory Committee
Multiple available positions
The Cable Advisory Committee serves as a liaison between Medford residents and cable providers. The Committee receives complaints, questions, and feedback from residents and works as a third party to assist with cable-related needs for residents. The Committee also plays a role in contract negotiations between the City of Medford and cable providers when contracts are being renewed.

Civic Auditorium & Convention Center Commission (Chevalier Theater)

The Civic Auditorium and Convention Center Commission is responsible for the coordination and upkeep of the Chevalier Theater as a means to encourage visitors to the City of Medford and to promote the local economy. The Commission consists of five total members.
The Commission meets regularly as needed.
Community Development Board

The Community Development Board serves as the City of Medford’s Planning Board. Responsibilities include administration of the Subdivision Control Law, conducting site plan review for major projects, reviewing and recommending changes to the Zoning Ordinance, adoption of a comprehensive master plan for the community, and general planning to guide growth and development in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
The Board normally meets monthly as required and members receive a $1,100 stipend annually.
Community Garden Commission

The Community Garden Commission works with the City and others to enhance the quality of urban life and build community bonds by creating and sustaining a gardening network that promotes the benefits of “green” and sustainable gardening practices. The Commission was established to organize, coordinate, set policies and provide oversight for new community gardens in Medford. It is made up of six members and two alternates.
The Commission normally meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7pm.
Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission is responsible for the administration of environmental laws and policies, open space protection and management, water management, and preservation of natural features of the environment. The Commission is required to protect and preserve wetlands and their surrounding areas, as well as open space. The Commission consists of seven members, all of which are appointed by the Mayor. At monthly meetings, the commission members work to ensure that all construction and development projects (residential, industrial, and commercial) that may alter any wetlands, floodplains, rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and/or associated buffer zones or riverfront areas are in compliance with state and local regulations.
The Commission normally meets monthly as required. Commissioners receive a $600 stipend.
Consumer Advisory Commission

The Consumer Advisory Commission is one in a statewide network of Local Consumer Protection Programs established by the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General to advise and assist in resolving consumer complaints. Our is to empower consumers with knowledge of their rights and to educate them on ways to protect themselves from becoming a victim of a scam, fraud or identity theft. We provide advice, education, referral and informal mediation services at no cost to consumers.
Council on Aging
Multiple available positions
The general mandate of the Council on Aging is to be the primary advocate for Medford’s older adults. The Council evaluates, promotes, encourages and provides new and existing services that are intended to enhance the quality of the lives of elder residents. The Council provides services to elders residing in the community; the determining age for services is sixty (60) years old.
The Council normally meets on the third Thursday of each month, at 1pm.
Energy & Environment Committee

The Energy & Environment Committee works in conjunction with the City’s Office of Community Development and Office of energy and Environment to support the City’s goals of energy independence and environmental stewardship. The Committee provides additional technical and consulting expertise to the City and organizes energy and environmental related projects, events and programs to benefit the residents of Medford. The Committee is comprised of Medford residents who bring a variety of expertise to the city, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, clean energy, community outreach and education.
Historical Commission

The Historical Commission works to preserve and protect the City’s historic character and heritage in order to sustain and improve the significance of Medford’s place in American history. The Historical Commission is the official City body charged with the identification of properties and sites in Medford of historical significance, and is the principal advisor to the City on matters relating to historic preservation. In accordance with local ordinance, the Commission is further charged with reviewing all requests for demolition of buildings constructed more than 75 years ago or that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places or the Massachusetts Register of Historic Places.
The Commission normally meets on the second Monday of each month.
Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission is the official City body charged with administration of the City’s designated Historic Districts. The Commission’s role is to ensure that any visible changes to properties within the Historic Districts enhances, rather than detracts from, the area’s historic character. The Commission can issue certificates of appropriateness, certificates of non-applicability, and certificates of hardship with respect to construction or alteration of buildings and structures within the historic districts. The goal of the Commission is to sustain and improve the significance of Medford’s place in American history and to increase the cultural and monetary wealth of Medford residents.
Hormel Stadium Commission (City Council Appointment)

The Hormel Commission deliberates on and approves permits for the use of Hormel Stadium, Outdoor Hockey Rink, LoConte Rink, Drane Fields, and the soccer field.
The Commission normally meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 5pm.
Medford Housing Authority Board (resident representative appointed by Mayor)

The City is seeking to appoint one Medford resident to a position on the Medford Housing Authority’s Board of Directors. Applicants must be residents of an MHA-managed building. Though the City does not oversee the MHA or its buildings, by statute, the Mayor appoints one resident member to the Board of Directors.
Zoning Board of Appeals
3 positions available, staggered terms
The Medford Zoning Board of Appeals is a statutory board created to hear appeals of denials of building permit and zoning enforcement requests to determine if a variance is allowed and appropriate under Massachusetts General Law c. 40A (The Massachusetts Zoning Act). The Board additionally serves as the Special Permit Granting Authority where required by local ordinance and regulation.
The Zoning Appeals meets monthly or as required.
