Information from Medford Fire Department re: Fire Pits

by Jackie Piques

As the weather starts to warm up and more residents begin to enjoy the outdoors, please remember that as a matter of public safety, fire pits of any kind are not permitted in the City of Medford. Beyond our local regulations, “open burning” of any kind, including the use of fire pits and chimineas, is prohibited per state law. Medford is one of 22 cities and towns where open burning is prohibited due to our densely populated community. You can read the full regulations and see the list of all 22 communities at www.mass.gov/service-details/open-burning-safety.

Why are fire pits prohibited? In densely populated communities, like Medford, embers from fire pits can easily travel and can accidentally ignite larger fires in surrounding structures, trees and brush, and other materials. Additionally, smoke from fire pits can easily travel to neighboring homes and can range from being a nuisance to causing more serious concerns for residents with certain health conditions.

This spring and summer, please remember to follow this important regulation and help us keep our community safe.
