INTERIM TRAFFIC ADJUSTMENTS FOR SOUTH & MAIN STREET INTERSECTION SCHEDULED TO BE INSTALLED APRIL 13TH
Following
a January 2021 Traffic Commission Approval, MassDOT will install
interim traffic pattern changes at the intersection this April.
MEDFORD
– A series of interim traffic pattern changes are being made to the
South Street and Main Street intersection beginning on Wednesday, April
14, 2021 (weather permitting), the City and the Massachusetts Department
of Transportation (MassDOT) announced today. In Fall 2020, MassDOT
announced a plan to move forward with the development of larger scale
safety improvements at the Main Street and South Street intersection in
Medford. While the City and State continue to work toward those
permanent changes at the intersection, such changes will take
significant time to fully develop and implement. In the interest of
safety, the City of Medford, working with MassDOT, developed a pilot of
short-term, temporary improvements at the intersection.
The plan was discussed by the Medford Traffic Commission at their public meeting on January 19, 2021.
Interim
improvements will include repainting lane markings on both South Street
and Main Street and placing temporary barricades at the intersection to
define new turn restrictions. New proposed traffic patterns would
include:
-
On South Street: Vehicles may turn left or right onto
Main Street but will be restricted from traveling straight onto the ramp
to Route 16 East that connects to I-93.
-
On Main Street Northbound (toward Medford Square): Lane
markings will better define one “straight” lane and one “right turn”
lane to the ramp to Route 16 East that connects to I-93.
-
On Main Street Southbound (toward Somerville/Boston): Left turns to the ramp to Route 16 East that connects toI-93 will be restricted.
The
interim pilot options are designed with safety of all road users in
mind but are flexible enough to make adjustments as needed.
MassDOT will implement the new traffic layout starting at 8:00pm on Tuesday, April 13th,
(weather permitting), working overnight. Electronic message boards will
be installed in and around the area to help direct traffic before and
after the changes are made. For details, including a plan of the new
layout and proposed alternate routes to access I-93, visit www.medfordma.org/transportation.
Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, language ability, economic situation, or immigration status.
