Joe,   Let's be very clear about the tragedy in Buffalo last weekend: a white supremacist murdered 10 people in cold blood with a legally purchased assault rifle. I am heartbroken, I am angry, and this was shamefully predictable.    White supremacy is not new in America. From the Constitution to Jim Crow, systemic racism has been at the core of the American experience. And 2022 is no different — what was once a fringe extremist ideology is now mainstream in today's Republican party: Great Replacement Theory . Do you believe white supremacy is a major domestic threat? Taking a page from the anti-Semitic "Elders of Zion," this conspiracy theory claims that Jewish people, immigrants, and people of color are coming to America to "replace" white people and take over the country. While you may not have heard of this ideology before, you've seen its deadly wake . It was cited in the murder of 11 at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue, in the massacre of 23 at an El Paso Walmart, in Charlottesville, and in the January 6th Insurrection . Today, a third of Americans  reportedly believe in the “Great Replacement” – it’s extremely dangerous and a threat to the health of our democracy and our physical safety. Last year, Attorney General Merrick Garland called white supremacy the greatest domestic terror threat that America currently faces — that's why I voted to pass the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act yesterday. Tragically, however, we cannot count on our Republican colleagues to be part of the solution as they openly stoke the flames . As legislators, protecting the safety of the American people must be our number one priority. And the question has never been more clear – are you on the side of democracy and American families, or of control, fear, and white supremacy?  I know where I stand, and I hope you’ll join me.
