Joint Statement from Mayor, Chief Buckley

On Monday, May 23rd Medford suffered the loss of a beloved community member, 61-year-old Barbara Novaes. Due to the circumstances surrounding her death, it is currently being investigated as a suspicious death. As with any investigation involving a death, this investigation is being led by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police who retain jurisdiction in this matter. The City of Medford will defer future comments on this matter to the investigators.

Our hearts and our thoughts are with Barbara’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We also know that many members of the Medford community knew and loved Barbara, and that many residents have been impacted by this week’s incident. Through the Medford Board of Health, we have resources and support services available to anyone who may need them. We encourage you to reach out to the Board of Health at 781-393-2560, or the Mayor’s Office at 781-393-2408 if you need any support.

As the investigation is ongoing, out of an abundance of caution the Medford Police Department will have additional patrols on and around Emery Street. If you have any information about this incident, or if you live in the area and have a doorbell camera or external camera that you think may help in the investigation, please contact the Medford Police Department at 781-395-1212. Video footage or images can be sent to Detective Michael Pellegrino at mpellegrino@medfordpolice.com.

We encourage all residents to continue to exercise general caution, and report suspicious activity to the Medford Police Department.
