Subject: City of Medford Heatwave and COVID-19 Update

Subject: City of Medford Heatwave and COVID-19 Update

This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with an update on the heatwave and COVID-19.

The City has cooling centers open this weekend for those who are looking for some relief from the weather. The Council on Aging is open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The community room at the Medford Police station is open 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. Each location is stocked with water and health safety information.

For more info on how to stay safe during a heatwave, visit medfordma.org.

Also, Medford, like many cities and towns across the country, is seeing an increase in positive covid cases. We are currently sitting at 7.6 percent, an increase of over one percentage point from this time last month. While this is concerning, we have many more tools at our disposal to protect our community and reduce the more harmful effects of the virus.

We are planning to hold a vaccine and booster shot clinic in mid-August for everyone ages 12 and up. Details of the clinic, including the date, time and location are still being finalized and we will communicate those in the very near future. We are also working with the school department to set up clinics for students in the fall.

If you need an appointment now, visit vaxfinder.mass.gov.

Additionally, the City has secured 10,000 rapid test kits and has been distributing them at locations throughout the city, including:

·      The West Medford Community Center

·      Mystic Valley Market

·      Council on Aging

·      Medford Public Library

·      Medford Housing Authority

·      And City Hall

Each kit consists of two tests and there is a limit of two kits per person. If you need help acquiring a kit, please call our multilingual resource line at 781-475-5644.

Have a great weekend!
