(Medford)—With the use of $60,000 of ARPA funding,

the City of Medford has partnered with professional licensed pest control company,

Yankee Pest Control, to assist the Board of Health with rodent complaints,

investigations, and compliance, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced.

Staff from Yankee Pest Control will investigate areas the Board of Health

have defined as problematic based on calls the city has received from

 residents and from their inspections.

They will be sent to identify sources of food, water or harborages

in neighborhoods that create ideal living conditions for rodents.

The pest control specialists will report all findings to the Board of Health.

“A common complaint I’ve heard since my time on the

City Council was the prevalence of rodents throughout the City,

” Mayor Lungo-Koehn said. “While we’ve made tremendous strides targeting

known problem areas with mitigation efforts which has reduced the number of

complaints considerably, rodents still persist in some areas of the City.

With this partnership we’re confident that this

effort will further limit the spread of rodents in an efficient and safe manor.”

This effort is in addition to the Clean Up, Seal Up, Trap Up

education campaign launched last year by the Medford Board of Health.

Rodents need food, water, and safe shelter to survive.

Residents and property owners who feed birds and wildlife,

may not appropriately pick up pet feces, have open water sources,

open trash or accumulation of debris in their yards,

improperly maintained composting, barrels with

cracks and holes or overgrowth on their property are all contributing

to the current rodent problem facing most communities.

Unfortunately, those conditions if not addressed will result

in enforcement efforts, including citations and fines, by the Board of Health.

In addition, City inspectors are investigating complaints

on all commercial properties. Since Mayor Lungo-Koehn proposed

and the City Council approved the rodent ordinance last year,

construction projects, street openings and dumpster permits

all require pest control plans.

 Dumpster inspections seeking compliance

with pest control requirements has resulted in close to

100 citations in June alone.

To address the issue of building development projects,

City staff use the written Rodent Control Ordinance

 requiring Integrated pest management

and rodent control measures be utilized

on all construction projects and street openings.

The Board of Health now reviews all building projects

that meet the requirements of the ordinance to

ensure integrated

pest management efforts is in place

throughout the duration of the project.

Measures can and are being taken to

address the rodent issue

but in order to be success,

 everyone’s cooperation is required.
