Reminders and Updates on Parking Appeals Process
Appeals done online or via mail and must be post marked within 21 days of violation date
(MEDFORD)—The City’s newly formed Parking Department has been fully operational for several months and has been issuing tickets, accepting payments and educating the public on the policies and procedures. Now, as the public is getting acclimated to this new parking system, the City is providing a reminder on the appeals process and information on when an appeal is successfully granted.
When a violation is issued, regarded as the first notice, you have 21 days to appeal the decision. The easiest, fastest and most efficient way to appeal, is to do so online at medfordma.org/parking. If you cannot access the internet and must mail your appeal to the department, include your violation along with a letter outlining why the ticket was issued erroneously.
If the mail is received by the parking department after the 21-day period, a late fee of $10 is automatically added to the violation regardless of the outcome of the appeal, but we have updated our policy to make sure this fee is later waived if it is post marked within the 21-day period. Since mail delivery times are not exact, it is highly recommended to mail your package well in advance of the end of the 21-day period.
The Parking Department will now alert you to the status of your appeal either via email or via USPS depending on the notification method you chose. Please note, you have to give your address if you want to be notified by mail or provide your e-mail if you are appealing on-line and want a response to be sent to you back by e-mail.
Appeals are typically granted when they are correcting a mistake of the Parking Department. If this is the case in your situation, be sure to adequately explain what the issue is with all the facts in a professional and courteous manner.
Examples of successful appeals:
- Violation has wrong license plate number
- Violation has wrong street listed
- Signage doesn’t reflect violation (ie. Permit parking times are different on signs than on violation)
- Photo evidence, which we have for every violation, clearly shows automobile not in violation
Parking Procedures and Violation reminders
As a reminder, the Parking Department has been and will be issuing violations for vehicles parked the wrong way on any street. Under state regulation, vehicles must park in the direction that traffic flows. Parking in the wrong direction can be unsafe for many reasons, and those vehicles will be ticketed. For a full list of parking violations that will be enforced, visit www.medfordma.org/parking.
For equity and consistency, the City does not spot enforce potential parking violations, therefore please do not call the Parking Department to report common violations. Parking Control Specialists will monitor all neighborhoods during their normal routes. If you need spot enforcement, you have to call the Medford Police Department. For example, if someone is blocking your driveway that has to be called into the Medford Police department.
As a reminder, parking-related violations that parking control specialists enforce include:
· Parking on a permit-only street without a resident permit
· Parking at a meter without paying
· Parking more than 12 inches from the curb
· Parking within 20 feet of an intersection
· Parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
· Parking in a Handicap space without a proper permit, or obstructing a ramp
· Displaying an expired parking permit sticker
All parking permit requests, payment options and other parking-related operations can be conducted online by visiting the City’s website at www.medfordma.org/parking. To obtain a residential permit, you must show your vehicle registration with a Medford address. To obtain a business parking permit, you must provide proof that you are an owner or employee of a Medford business.
If you would like to obtain a visitor parking permit, you will need to visit the Parking Department in person and bring a valid proof of Medford residency (ie. a utility bill, bank statement, etc.) Visitor permits cannot be obtained online and are valid for 48 hours.
As a reminder, credit card payments are only accepted online. If you are coming in person to the Parking Department to pay a ticket or purchase a permit, you must pay via check or money order. The City is in the process of installing a kiosk at the Parking Department to allow the public to pay electronically while in person. More information on that update will follow.
If you have any questions, or need more information, contact the parking clerk at 781-393-2463.
