Fall 2022 Update From Mayor Breanna

Sat, Nov 19 at 8:51 AM

Friend

I can’t believe the year is already winding down. We’ve been hard at work getting so many incredible projects and programs complete, and we’re not done yet! I am so grateful for your support. You’ve been with me every step of the way, helping make our City a better place. Now as we enter 2023, with an opponent announcing in a couple weeks, I’ll need your help once again to make sure that we can continue our work to deliver the positive results for Medford.

I know this economy has been tough on all of us, but if you believe in our vision and want to help us achieve our goal, please consider donating any amount, no matter how small, so we can keep our promise of making our City better for you, your family,  and loved ones.

Now as we begin to close the chapter on 2022, and look ahead to the new year, I wanted to
highlight a few key accomplishments we’ve had this past year.

  • We’ve secured a $4 million in funding to make critical improvements to Carr Park
  • Implemented our Multilingual resource line and hired 5 community liaisons
  • We received 8 proposals for the over 20,000 square feet of air rights the city owns above the Wellington T parking lot
  • Medford Square RFP will be released in 2023 after the community input process & waterfront activation design is underway
  • ARPA planning to help all those affected by COVID
  • Major IT and website upgrades underway at City Hall and soon our Fire Department
  • Secured $800K for accessibility upgrades at Gillis Park
  • Enhanced translation services with more to come
  • We’ve utilized ARPA funding to renovate the Tufts Pool Deck which is under
    construction now.
  • Expanded public Art at Tufts Pool, Laconte Rink, Wright Pond with more to come
  • Business Façade grant program & outdoor dinning
  • Community Aggregation with a rate of 15cents pkh
  • Bluebike implementation with 9 more stations to come
  • Advocated for transportation needs for our residents during the orange line shutdown
and for changes to the better bus network redesign
  • An Architect has been chosen for the a new Fire Headquarters
  • Pride Festival, Halloween Fest, Winter Extravaganza and more fun events
  • Expanded our Tree Canopy
  • Applied for and awaiting results of the MSBA loan for Medford High School
  • Utilized our Pavement and Sidewalk Assessment report to make significant investment in repairing our roads and sidewalks.
    • We’re repairing 94 streets with a process called ‘Crack Sealing’
    • Made Freedom Way a public way, allowing us to allocate Chapter 90 funding to rebuild and repave the road.
    • Working with the state, and through public/private partnerships to patch and repave some of our main roadways including Winthrop Street

This is just a small sample of the work the great team and I have done but as we look ahead to 2023, we know what lies ahead of us—continuing to support our new standalone parking department—build on the work they’ve done creating a more equitable and efficient system for our residents while working on policy to support the needs of the community. With our strong team in Engineering and DPW, we continue to work through the backlog of road maintenance as identified in our Pavement and Sidewalk Assessment plan. Through our new HR hiring platform BetterTeams, grow our talented and hardworking staff at City Hall.

I promise to continue to do the hard things. I promise to build on the foundation of transparency, accountability, advocacy and equity and make sure that the needs of our city, our families and our neighbors continue to be heard, met and supported.

With gratitude,

Breanna
