In his younger days (1949 when he was circa 32)  Bob Smith was certainly a handsome man, but his looks went south pretty quickly....perhaps the show aged him?

For the record. I am not an American, I never grew up with the whole Howdy Doody phenomenon, but golly gee this is a creepy puppet. I ve worked with horror and creepy puppets before (Helloooo Nigel Honeybone, seriously check him out on some of my other videos) . But Howdy Doody..? Just wow. Please enjoy him :-)
