(MEDFORD) — Applications are open for three available positions on the City’s Charter Study Committee, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced.

The Committee has been comprehensively studying the City’s current charter, gathering input from the community, and upon concluding their findings, will propose recommendations for a new charter.

“Being tasked with recommending updates to our current City Charter is a huge responsibility and important role in allowing our City to operate more effectively,” said Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. “The members on the Committee have done an incredible job beginning this process but as with all bodies, there are vacancies that need be filled with residents interested in bringing Medford into the future.”

Before applying to serve, please consider the commitment that is required. The Committee currently meets monthly via Zoom on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm, and plans to add meetings in the fall and winter. Members of the public are encouraged to share thoughts and feedback on the charter, and have opportunities to do so at regular committee meetings, community forum events, surveys, and via a comment form on the committee’s web page.

Committee members, under the direction of the Chair Milva McDonald, are expected to make a significant commitment which includes attending meetings, conducting research, reading and studying relevant materials, participating in outreach, coordinating with City staff, and aiding in the creation of a final report.

Medford’s charter establishes the City’s governing system and structure. It specifies term lengths for elected officials, the presence or absence of term limits, the composition of the City Council and School Committee, the City’s form of executive leadership, and much more.
