Joe Viglione, host of the Pop Explosion and Visual Radio, has interviewed Academy Award Winners Jodie Foster, Michael Moore, director Robert Zemeckis, Grammy winners Bobby Hebb, Rolling Stones/Eric Clapton producer Rob Fraboni, Grammy-winning drummer Steve Holley, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger, John Densmore and producer Bruce Botnick of The Doors, along with personalities from all walks of life including Bill Press of Sirius/XM (formerly of CNN’s Crossfire,) Mark Farner and Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad, children’s author and Jetson’s cartoon scriptwriter Laura Numeroff, Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominoes, iconic 60’s record producer Jerry Ross, comedians Gilbert Gottfried, Gallagher, Margaret Cho and hundreds and hundreds of other gifted individuals.


Viglione’s history in radio goes back to WCUW in 1978, 1979 for public access TV starting in Somerville on Day Street.  38 years later he returned to Somerville coordinating both the Pop Explosion and Visual Radio supporting the Somerville/Cambridge/Boston/ New England music community by spinning local music and interviewing members of local bands on air, in – much like Philadelphia’s WKDU at Drexel University “playing genres and styles ignored by other stations, and in maintaining a diverse schedule of radio programming including audio versions of the TV program Visual Radio (called Non-Visual  Radio) after a show Joe produced and hosted in 2000 on AM 1670 as well as AM 740 WJIB.

Viglione has produced, worked as advertising rep, and consulted for program director Steve Becker at WCGY 93.17 1991-1993, he was program director of WNSH AM 1570 in 1992 and P.D. of AM 1670 Allston/Brighton Free Radio in 2000.   

As Program Director he hosted the “best of” Allston Brighton Free Radio on the highly rated AM 740 WJIB on Saturday nights airing interviews with Lou Reed, Christmas Box author Richard Paul Evans and others.  

Joe has hosted shows on a number of area radio stations and public access TV stations over the past 41 years.  

He has taped for VH-1 and the BBC (the Songlines special on Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny”) and was Director of Research for North American Media working with the CEO on the creation of PBS specials for mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne and actor Paul Sorvino.   

 Viglione directed and produced the first documentary film (released worldwide / MVD) on Marty Balin, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist and founding member of The Jefferson Airplane.  

In the nine years that he worked for AllMusic.com / Rovi Joe wrote approximately 5,000 biographies, reviews of books, albums, songs and movies.  Some of the material is published in about eight or more books (The All Music Guide to Country, the All Music Guide to Soul, etc.) while he is quoted and thanked in many more.   

Joe helped the Boston Phoenix with their very first Boston Band Guide, his work published in local and national magazines Billboard, Radioworld, Goldmine, Discoveries, The Boston Globe, Musician’s, The Beat, The Real Paper and more. He is currently the Chief Film Critic for the popular TMRZoo, an online magazine, columnist for the Somerville News Weekly and – of course – continues to host Visual Radio and the Joe Vig Pop Explosion.
