If Walsh steps down before March 5, current city rules call for a special election to fill that post before November.

But, at least 11 city councilors appear to support a change that would allow City Council President Kim Janey to step in as acting mayor until the general election.

Three current city councilors are already in the race to replace Walsh, and more are expected to join.
