Medford Seeks to Fill Vacancies on Various Boards and Commissions
Multiple Boards and Commissions are currently seeking to fill various positions. Residents of all backgrounds and abilities are encouraged to apply
(MEDFORD) — The City of Medford is currently accepting applications from Medford residents to serve on one of its many City Boards & Commissions.
Residents who are interested in serving on any of the boards and commissions below should complete the Board and Commission Interest Form available at medfordma.org/boards-commissions. If you are in need of a physical form, please visit the Mayor’s Office at Medford City Hall, 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Room 202, Medford, MA 02155.
Residents of all backgrounds and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation.
In addition to the boards and commissions below, residents are always encouraged to submit letters of interest for any board of commission listed on our website. Should vacancies become available on any city board or commission in the future, we will contact you for opportunities within your area of interest.

Bicycle Advisory Commission
Multiple Positions Available
The Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission is here to encourage those who live, work and travel in Medford, Massachusetts to ride bikes. The commission educates road users on how to ride and drive safely, advises the city on ways to improve our infrastructure, and organizes our local community of cyclists.
The Bicycle Advisory Commission is an Ad Hoc commission.
Board of Health
1 Position Available
The Medford Board of Health’s mission is to improve, preserve and protect the health of the citizens of the City of Medford. The Board will advocate for a safe environment, for the reduction of known health risks, and for the application of known preventive health measures. The Board will enact its mission through the health agents and staff and in cooperation with other local, State, and Federal agencies and departments.
Community Development Board
2 Associate Member Positions Available
The Community Development Board consists of seven members, of which six are appointed by the Mayor and one by the State. The Board’s responsibilities include administration of the Subdivision Control Law, conducting site plan review for major projects, reviewing and recommending changes to the Zoning Ordinance, and general planning to guide growth and development in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
Community Garden Commission
2 Alternate Positions Available
The Community Garden Commission works to enhance the quality of urban life and build community bonds by creating and sustaining a gardening network that promotes the benefits of “green” and sustainable gardening practices.
Community Preservation Committee
Multiple Positions Available
The Community Preservation Committee of Medford is responsible for evaluating the preservation needs of the City of Medford and making recommendations to the Mayor and Medford City Council to appropriate Community Preservation Act funds for projects that would best fulfill those needs. Through use of an open process, and actively engaging the community, we will endeavor to improve open space, recreation, affordable housing, and historic preservation through the allocation of funding provided by the citizens and businesses of the City of Medford.
Conservation Commission
1 Position Available
The Medford Conservation Commission is responsible for the administration of environmental laws and policies, open space protection and management, water management, and preservation of natural features of the environment.
The Conservation Commission meets the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.
Council on Aging
The Medford Council on Aging is to be the primary advocate for Medford’s older adults. To that end, the Council evaluates, promotes, encourages, and provides new and existing services that are intended to enhance the quality of the lives of elder residents.
The Council meeting the third Thursday of the month at 10 am at the Council on Aging, 101 Riverside Avenue.
Energy and Environment Committee
1 Position Available
Our mission is to promote policies and actions that improve energy efficiency, encourage conservation, and increase the use of renewable energy to meet our present needs while considering future generations of the Medford community.
The Energy and Environment Committee generally meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Hormel Stadium Commission
The Hormel Stadium Commission works to ensure the proper upkeep and operations of the athletic facility. The three-member board has two members appointed by the Mayor and one member appointed by the City Council.
Housing Authority
The Medford Housing Authority is a leader in the development, management and administration of subsidized affordable housing for low-income elderly, family and disabled households. Our mission is to develop and manage safe, good quality, affordable housing for low-income individuals and families in a manner that promotes citizenship, community and self-reliance.
Human Rights Commission
Multiple Positions Available
The mission of the Human Rights Commission is to protect the civil rights of Medford residents, reinforce a positive community atmosphere, work with community groups and agencies to educate, promote understanding to eliminate prejudice and intolerance, and to mediate within the community whenever needed.
The Commission normally meets the second Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm in Room 201 of Medford City Hall.
Park Commission
1 Position Available
The Park Commission is responsible for more than twenty-four parks and playgrounds, passive parks, Riverbend Park and Hormel Stadium and, in the summer months, Wright’s Pond and Tufts Pool. These sites comprise over 118 acres of land. The commission meets monthly.
Traffic Commission
1 Positions Available
The Traffic Commission sets policy around the City’s parking procedures, traffic regulations and road accessibility.
The commission meets on the second Tuesday of every month.
Water and Sewer Commission
1 Position Available
The Water and Sewer Division provides for the maintenance and repair of the water and sewer infrastructure throughout the City of Medford.
Welcoming Committee
Multiple Positions Available
The Welcoming Committee is made up of a diverse group of residents and businesses to design resident and business resource guides, and work to support new residents and businesses to the City of Medford.
Zoning Board of Appeals
1 Alternate Position Available
The Medford Zoning Board of Appeals is a statutory board created to hear appeals of denials of building permit and zoning enforcement requests to determine if a variance is allowed and appropriate under Massachusetts General Law c. 40A (The Massachusetts Zoning Act). The Board additionally serves as the Special Permit Granting Authority where required by local ordinance and regulation. The Zoning Appeals meets monthly or as required.
