In 1989 on this day, December 2, I was heading to New York to see the reunion of Lou Reed and John Cale.
There was a moment where the road started icing and cars were swerving every which way. My friend who was driving had a steady hand and we made it there safely. While at the concert someone broke into the car, stole my new pants, checkbook and keys! In Brooklyn, New York. Funny how certain things like that stick thirty-one years later.
That night my guitarist, Fudge, was in Newton having drinks with his pregnant girlfriend. Her ex was driving him home and the vehicle slammed into the wall of the Mass. Pike. Dec 2, 1989. Same time I was in New York watching Lou Reed.
The undertaker was one of our local band lead singers. He phoned my office, which was in Wakefield telling me that my guitarist had passed, that a copy of our album was on cassette, bloodied, in his top pocket as his new band was on WBRS radio the night before (in Waltham). He had played with Stephen Stills (of Crosby Stills Nash and Young,) the late Sib Hashian of the band Boston and my group.
Allegedly it was not an accident. Allegedly the ex-boyfriend had done this before and walked away the first time. This time they both died. Very sad story.
And thinking about that icy ride in Connecticut on the way to the Brooklyn concert, half the band could have died that day.
