Message from the Mayor
Thank you for reading our latest Newsletter! I hope that you have found these Newsletters to be helpful and informational. We are always looking for ways to keep our community informed and involved, so if you have suggestions or comments please feel free to share them with our staff by emailing alerts@medford-ma.gov.As we head into the full swing of fall I'm so happy to see that our small businesses are nearly back up to pre-pandemic numbers, but that doesn't mean that we're done working to improve resources and find more relief options for the future. This past year we streamlined the outdoor dining permitting process and got those operations set up quickly so patrons could safely dine out. We're looking to enhance that program and make it permanent next year.
In the meantime, there are small ways we can all make a difference by supporting and frequenting our small businesses. You can start a #TakeOutTuesday tradition by getting food to-go from a local restaurant, or simply consider our own local businesses first before heading to a big box or chain store whenever possible. Every little bit can help, and our local businesses have a lot to offer! For more on our local businesses, or if you are a local business owner, I invite you to visit our brand new Business Resource Website and Business Resource Guide that are now available at www.medfordma.org/business-resources.
Recent News
Mayor Seeks to Overhaul Outdated Hiring Policy, Waste Removal Operations Through State GrantsMayor Lungo-Koehn is advancing two large policy initiatives through the State’s most recent round of Community Compact Grants. The City was awarded two grants for Fiscal Year 2022. The Mayor will pursue a comprehensive Wage and Classification Plan to bring Medford’s hiring policies and procedures in line with modern government and to ensure the City is offering competitive salaries with regard to surrounding communities. With the second grant, the Mayor will advance a Solid Waste Task Force to assess current trash, recycling, and composting practices in Medford and to develop Waste Contracts that are fiscally, environmentally and otherwise beneficial to the community.
Update on Renovations at Medford Fire StationsBeginning in February 2021, the City has been conducting upgrades and repairs at all of Medford’s fire stations. In July, we issued a Request for Qualifications to begin the process of design feasibility for a new or renovated Headquarters. Last week, contractors began a roof replacement project at Engine 6 on Ames St., which marks the latest in a series of ongoing renovations.

Pavement and Sidewalk Evaluation and Report: Complete!
Early in 2020 Mayor Lungo-Koehn commissioned a comprehensive review and detailed evaluation of our entire network of roads and sidewalks. To fully understand and address issues and necessary repairs, we need to understand our baseline, conduct a cost analysis, and develop a plan that gets the work done but also prevents future issues and avoids simply kicking the can down the road even further. The report not only takes a detailed look at the surface conditions of every public street and sidewalk in Medford, but also breaks down the costs and conditions associated with several different options for repairs, from crack sealing and paving the surface to a full-depth reconstruction of certain streets.
Airplane Noise Update + Public HearingDespite the efforts of the Lungo-Koehn administration and our community representatives to the Massport Community Advisory Committee, we continue to hear from frustrated and concerned residents about the ongoing issues with increased airplane traffic over portions of our city. For over a year we have advocated to the FAA, Massport, and our state and federal delegations to try to get some relief for our residents. We have specifically asked that there be a more equitable dispersion of flights over all communities surrounding Logan Airport, rather than directing a heavy amount of air traffic over Medford. Recently, Massport and the FAA completed an RNAV study that shows how stark the increase has been, but fails to make any changes in routes.Last month Mayor Lungo-Koehn submitted a lengthy letter to our federal delegation once again requesting their help and advocacy on this issue. (You can read the full letter and all updates at www.medfordma.org/airplane-noise.) In the meantime, Massport will be holding a virtual public meeting on Thursday, September 23rd at 5:30pm where residents can provide feedback on the RNAV study. Please join the virtual meeting and find more information by clicking the button below..
