“Every T employee plays a critical role in achieving the MBTA’s primary goal of providing safe and reliable transportation services,” Pesaturo said. “The MBTA has demonstrated time and time again that there are consequences, sometimes very severe, for those who fail to follow these rules.

“It takes continuous effort to maintain and improve a positive safety culture, and that’s why the MBTA investigates violations of operating policies and takes disciplinary actions as warranted.”

The T’s tendency to overwork employees to make up for its staffing shortage was cited as a major issue in a federal report released this summer. While the feds focused on subway operations, the MBTA also has a bus driver shortage — data showed there were 350 vacancies as of Sept. 27.

“Our public transit system is the backbone of how people meet the needs of their families,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said. “And the baseline is that it has to be safe.
