Thanks, Jim Silva, Double digit Case Counts, and a candidate for school committee, Kerry Laidlaw, demanding optional mask wearing. YIKES! What a danger to the children!
Hello,
This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a COVID-19 update.
The
Delta variant continues to spread throughout the country, the state and
Medford is not immune to its effects as cases have continued to rise
over the summer. We have seen multiple days over the past two weeks of
double-digit case counts. Thankfully, our vaccination rate remains high,
with over 80 percent of eligible residents having received at least one
dose.
Despite this progress on the vaccination front, the sheer
number of positive cases — 60 in the last seven days — is concerning
and due to the increase risk the Delta variant poses, I am requiring
that masks be worn inside all City facilities, regardless of vaccination
status, effective Monday, August 23. I
understand the frustrations you may have regarding this renewed
restriction, but as I’ve always said — my top priority is keeping the
people of Medford safe. Masks greatly reduce the spread of the virus and
help protect you and your fellow neighbors from getting sick. Free
masks are available at the Board of Health office located in City Hall
if you need them.
We will continue to monitor the data and make
informed decisions in conjunction with our Board of Health team, based
on science and sound public health protocols. To that end, we are now
also strongly encouraging all residents, regardless of vaccination
status, to wear a mask indoors whiles shopping. It’s just the smart
thing to do to keep everyone safe.
The City has staff ready to
assist if you have any questions or need help finding resources. Please
call our multilingual resource line at 781-475-5644, or our housing and development office at 781-393-2480 with questions on rental assistance options. Questions about evictions please visit medfordma.org/covid-19-housing-resources/ for more info.
I
know how hard all of this has been on you and as one who has gotten
used to being mask free I know how frustrating this is. But this is the
right thing to do. It will slow the spread, it will keep your family and
my family safe, and it will help put an end to the pandemic. We can do
this Medford.
Thank you.
