Massachusetts Board of Education to allow statewide school mask mandate
Protesters gather outside DESE building MALDEN, Mass. —
The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted Tuesday to give the state's education commissioner the authority to mandate masks for all public K-12 students and staff.
Education Commissioner Jeffrey C. Riley has pushed for a mandate to be put in place through Oct. 1, “to ensure schools fully reopen safely and to provide time for more students and educators to get vaccinated.”
The board voted 9-1 to allow the commissioner to put forth the mandate. Board member Paymon Rouhanifard, who voted no, said the proposal was "bad public policy." https://www.wcvb.com/article/massachusetts-board-of-education-mask-mandate-public-schools-vote/37376258
