Mayor Lungo-Koehn Appoints Deputy Chief John E. Freedman as New Fire Chief
Current Fire Chief, Frank A. Giliberti Jr., Set to Retire in November
Giliberti has served as Medford Fire Chief for over 23 years.
John Freedman has served on Medford Fire Department since 1995, as Deputy Chief since 2015.
MEDFORD – Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced today that, with the upcoming retirement of Medford Fire Chief Frank A. Giliberti Jr., she has appointed current Deputy Fire Chief John E. Freedman as the incoming Chief of the Medford Fire Department. Chief Giliberti is retiring effective November 30, 2021, after over 23 years as Medford’s Fire Chief and a total of more than 39 years with the department. Incoming Chief John E. Freedman, a Medford resident, has been a member of the department for 26 years, being promoted to lieutenant in 2003, captain in 2008, and deputy chief in 2015.
“I am honored to appoint John Freedman as Medford’s new Fire Chief,” said Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. “In his decades of service to the City of Medford, Deputy Chief Freedman has been a dedicated and valued member of our fire department. He continues to do great work for his fellow firefighters and for the entire Medford community, and is always working to expand his training and his knowledge. I also want to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to Chief Giliberti for his years of service to the City of Medford. It has been an honor to work with him and I wish him all the best in retirement.”
“I am incredibly honored to step into this new role as Fire Chief for the Medford Fire Department,” said incoming Chief Freedman. “I have enjoyed every aspect of this job, from starting out as a firefighter to being in a command role. As I have risen through the ranks, I took every opportunity to share what I learned through training and experience and I am excited to be able to continue that as Chief. I see an opportunity to continue to bring positive change to the department as Chief, through advancing our collective knowledge, skills and abilities, and utilizing new technology to upgrade our equipment and facilities. I will continue the work we have already started, and I look forward to working with my fellow firefighters and the Medford community in this new role.”
Incoming Chief Freedman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Bunker Hill Community College. He is also an Army veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
“Deputy Chief Freedman has been a valuable asset to the Medford Fire Department throughout his career,” said Chief Giliberti. “I am confident that he will do a great job in leading the department into the future. I wish him all the best and look forward to helping him in his new role in any way I can.”
Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, immigration status, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation.
