Medford Electronics Recycling? Is it a SCAM?

I asked Mayor Michael J. McGlynn (at the first press conference for the Educational Channel disguised as an access TV station) what would happen to the old equipment.

Mr. Green (as in Martian) Energy McGlynn proudly declared to his mortal enemy "I'm a recycler."

Balderdash. McGlynn is self-centered and ripped the residents off in regards to access television...again.

SO, what is this new "recycling" of YOUR materials and CHARGING you to drop them off?

You should be able to get money for your old electronics

April 7 and June 9th Medford is having a recycling of

electronics BUT there are places that should pay you for your old electric devices. There are elements within those devices of value: Do a quick Google, don't throw your money away not knowing if someone is profiting or if they are dumping the materials in third world countries without telling us

The recycler should be certified by a third party auditor to verify their environmental practices. I just wrote to liquidatedstuff, the company listed, to find out if they are certified.

Do you have electronic or other items that you need to properly dispose of? There are two upcoming opportunities to do that in Medford, and benefit the community at the same time:

SATURDAY, APRIL 7

Electronics Recycling Event to Benefit Medford Public Elementary Schools

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Brooks Elementary School Parking Lot

388 High Street (lot borders Prescott and Auburn Streets)

Recycle old televisions, computers, radios, vacuum cleaners, etc. at an affordable rate with proceeds helping Medford’s elementary school students. Rate list to be announced soon.

Cash and checks made out to the Brooks PTO will be accepted.

This is a cross-district PTO event organized and coordinated by the four elementary schools (Brooks, McGlynn, Columbus and Roberts). All schools will share in the profits.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9

Recycling Truck at the Medford Public Library

111 High Street

9 a.m. to noon

Free recycling of Phones, Printers, Light Fixtures, All Appliances, AC Units, Ballasts, Wire, Cell phones, Lawn mowers, Medical equipment, White goods, PCs, Copiers, Fax Machines, Scanners, Servers, Laptops, Modems, Chargers, Scrap Metals, Pipe, Battery Operated Tools, Filing Cabinets. Printed Circuit Board, Metal Desks, Bicycles, Ink and Toner Cartridges, Keyboards.

There will be a charge of $25 for TVs, $15 for any monitor, and 55 cents per pound for alkaline batteries. Light bulbs and toy plastics will not be accepted.

Tom Lincoln responds: So, here 's the usual question:

"How do we know that electronic materials will not be sent for 'processing' to the Third World, where they will damage the health of the people who sort them, and the environment, when the leftovers are dumped wherever?"

(The recycling of electronics, while certainly laudable, has been plagued by downstream problems. it may be better now, but as a participant I would like to know more about the recycling agency involved with the PTOs.)
