STEVIE WONDER 'CLOSE TO YOU / NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE"
FRIDAY'S CONCERT started 30 minutes earlier, 9:30 am.
I performed until 11:11 am...101 minutes! ...with 4 three-ring binders of song, the main binder was still in the apartment, so I grabbed two of them with songs not yet practiced.
"Close To You" got the Isaac Hayes / Dionne Warwick treatment from me to start off the show, for about 20 minutes, an extended mix while I learned the song in public. Wasn't going to add this to the set, but it works ...and there are fun things I can do on the piano with this Bacharach/David tune. Burt Bacharach called my hotel in Los Angeles in 1988...we were staying at the Chateau Marmont and Stones' producer Jimmy Miller was at Burt's wedding to Angie Dickinson, so Burt was looking for Jimmy.
"A Whiter Shade of Pale" (extended,) also in the set, along with the Ray Charles Singers (not pianist Ray Charles, a different Ray Charles) "Love Me With All Your Heart."
A very nice fellow came up to the piano and complimented me (one hand playing!) and told me he plays harmonica. So I invited him to perform at the Dec 22 Christmas party. This was around 9:45 am, by 11 am I went into the coffee room and he was having a situation. Others asked me to get some napkins for him and they called 911. It was some kind of medical emergency. 8 rescue people, from firefighters to ambulance came in and they took him away on a stretcher.
Life is too precious. Two days later we do not know his status.

while Carpenter's pedestrian run-through has not a scintilla of feeling or passion.
Karen did the same thing with "Superstar,"
just reading the words as off of a breakfast menu.
