City Moves Up Paving Timeline for Winthrop Street

Milling and paving work to begin this fall and be completed by Thanksgiving

(MEDFORD)—The City has received confirmation from energy provider Eversource, that the pavement timeline for a portion of the heavily trafficked Winthrop Street has been accelerated and will begin this October at the urging of Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn.

Eversource workers will mill and pave Winthrop Street from Medford High School to the City line and plan to have work completed by Thanksgiving. They will provide regular updates to the City’s Engineering team and information will be communicated to the public over the course of the project.

When completed this portion of the road will include a designated bike lane, sporadic designated on street parking, new curbing and new sidewalks along the corridor. The sidewalk work had been a longstanding priority for Mayor Lungo-Koehn and at her request and in collaboration of the City Engineer, the portion of the sidewalk work has been extended to Playstead Road.

Work has been ongoing to bring the sidewalks and wheelchair ramps along the corridor extended to include the section up to Playstead Road, up to ADA compliance.

The next phase of the project, tentatively scheduled to begin next spring, included milling and repaving:

  • Main street to Mystic Ave
  • Mystic Ave from the Medford VFW to Somerville line
  • Portion of Winthrop Street from Lawrence Road to Route 16

This road repaving project is funded by Eversource.
