Medford Breaking Ground on
Major Renovation Project at Carr Park
Groundbreaking Ceremony to
be Held on October 11 at 3pm
Initial Phase of Project Includes Dedicated
Pickleball Courts, an Accessible Path, Reconstructed Baseball Diamonds, and More
(MEDFORD) — The City of Medford will break ground on a nearly
$3 million renovation project at Carr Park on
Wednesday, October 11, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced. The City is commemorating this event
with a groundbreaking ceremony at 3pm. All are welcome to join.
The Carr Park renovation project is split into two phases.
The initial phase of construction is funded through a grant from the Massachusetts
Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’
(EEA) Land and Water Conservation Fund Program (LWCF), American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Community Preservation Act (CPA),
and linkage monies. Phase I of the project includes an accessible
path that circles the entire park field, reconstruction of two baseball diamonds, a woodland area cleanup and invasive plant removal,
fully dedicated pickleball courts, and more.
“We made it a priority to renovate, repair and restore many of
our parks and open spaces these past 3 years and Carr Park is going to be one of our biggest park renovation projects yet,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “
Thanks to the work of our Office of Planning, Development, and Sustainability
and our Procurement Office, Carr Park is going to
feel like a brand-new space for the community to enjoy.
Phase two of the project is made possible thanks to the support and work
of our Congresswoman Katherine Clark who secured a federal earmark to fund the project.”
Community outreach will be used to inform the design for the second part of the Carr Park project. This phase includes a four-season playground, obstacle course and fitness area, teen swings, two basketball courts- one of which covered with the intent to install solar panels on the roof, a shaded pavilion with seating, a skate park, additional invasive plant management, and more. Funding for the second phase comes from a $1.5 million federal earmark secured by Congresswoman Katherine Clark, as well as ARPA and additional grant funding.
The City most recently opened new basketball and tennis courts at Hickey Park. The new Morrison Park Playground was just unveiled, boasting a sandbox, preschool-aged play elements, and safety improvements. The City also broke ground on a $1.4 million renovation project at Gillis Park in August that includes a total redesign of the baseball field, a new outdoor exercise area, a picnic area, a loop walking path and accessibility improvements.
