Dec. 11 --The MBTA is cutting off contracts with several firms working on the multibillion-dollar Green Line extension, including its general contractor, project manager and designer, as it tries to grapple with the project's ballooning costs.
Citing revelations that the project will "significantly exceed" its budget, the T decided to sever ties yesterday -- just a day after holding a meeting where officials said all options remain on the table, including scrapping the project altogether. Originally slated to cost $1.99 billion , officials say it could cost up to $1 billion more to construct the 4.7-mile extension.
