Dearest Honorable Mayor Lungo-Koehn
Here we go again, another scuffle over Christopher Columbus.
An Italian sea captain, funded by Ferdinand ll the King of Spain to find a new passage to India, and who instead bumped into the Western Hemisphere, is somehow vilified as the subjugator of Native Americans.
Why? It wasn’t Columbus who sent the conquistadors (Pizarro, etc.) to conquer the Indians and take their gold, it was Spain.
The American West and Southwest were explored and occupied by the Spanish, not the Italians. And, on the East Coast, it was the English and French who messed with the indigenous population, hundreds of years after Christopher Columbus last set foot on the Island of Hispaniola.
If we are to argue over Christopher Columbus let us at least get the history straight. Or, is this just another case of “my mind is made up, don’t confuse me with the facts”?

Lawrence to hold hearing on renaming Columbus Day for indigenous people

LAWRENCE — First, it was students at Lawrence Public Schools who convinced local leaders to change the school calendar to mark Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day in mid-October. Now, the City Council plans to hold a public hearing to see if city residents want to adopt an ordinance to follow suit.
Councilors recently voted to order a public hearing to determine if residents want to side with resident Frank Bonet, who petitioned the council to "rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day."
Bonet, who serves as the city's personnel director, filed the petition as a private citizen, according to City Councilor Jeovanny Rodriguez. Bonet did not attend the remote council meeting, leaving many unanswered questions.
Several
councilors requested to table the request until Bonet could be
available to answer additional questions related to his request — chief
among them whether or not he was seeking a resolution or an ordinance.

am hoping this article reaches many readers and the word spreads. This
year many in our City including the School Committee ( except Kreatz)
and the Mayor who is Pres of the Committee opted and voted to change the
Columbus School
name on the premise that Columbus used some slaves and his crew ravaged
znd raped some Indians. These acts of any sort are horrendous and
allegation without VALID PROOF is worse. I am waiting to see the facts.
