Councilor George Scarpelli, who had voted against the initiative in the past, reversed his earlier stance, citing the interest among the electorate in launching the process.
He cautioned, however, that a push to move to ward representation instead of each councilor serving at-large can backfire.
“I work in a city that elects representatives by ward,” Scarpelli said, referencing his position in Somerville's recreation department.
