Green Line Service to Somerville Starts on Monday March 21 2022

The Green Line Extension to Union Square in Somerville is set to begin Monday as crews put the finishing touches on the new station.

A new Lechmere Station in Cambridge is still very much an active work zone, but the doors on Green Line trolleys will soon open for passengers for service to Somerville.

“To see us this close to delivering this service to people is something I’m really excited to be a part of,” project manager John Dalton said.

The $2.3 billion project that brings service to Medford, Somerville and Cambridge is still under budget, according to MBTA officials, but it has taken countless delays and other setbacks to get it running.

“COVID-19 the last 2 1/2 years was probably the biggest challenge we've had to overcome. Previously, there was cost overruns and things of that nature,” Dalton said.

Dalton was brought on as project manager in 2016.

“We're just really glad to be where we are considering all of the challenges we've had,” he said.

He said one of the biggest lessons he's learned is the advantage of having a dedicated project team focusing solely on the Green Line Extension.

The first part of the Green Line Extension opens Monday. Here’s what you need to know.

"When both branches of GLX are open, 80% of Somerville's population will be within walking distance of a rail station."
