 A Joe Viglione Essay

*Note - There is no humor in this essay.  If you think my dry comedic side is coming through, it is not. I'm as serious as a judge here.  This is about YOUR future, Medford, so read carefully, re-read it, and understand.  This writer has YEARS of experience studying the politics of Medford.

#1 The McGlynn Factor(s)

What motivates individuals?  One would think being a mayor for 28 years would be enough.  In a perfect world, perhaps it would be...dare I make an educated guess that in a perfect world 8 years would be enough.

Michael J. McGlynn seized the levers of power with Medford under Plan A government.  The capacity of his "magic wand" was beyond immense within Medford's borders, and with his family tentacles at his command - tentacles curling and snarling across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, he was (and still is) a most formidable opponent.  Handle with care. McGlynn is more dangerous than a third rail on the MBTA.

Where is McGlynn Information Central?   >  the power base being here in this sleepy town,  Medford, what they call a "bedroom community," with its number of "rabble rousers" kept neatly in check...as much as possible, by one of the most powerful mayors ever to control a city in these New England states.
Did McGlynn get sloppy?  Well that math is rather easy to do, he's no longer in office, is he?   I never underestimated Mike McGlynn and still don't.   Prior to the death of Sheriff Jimmy DiPaola I told my friend Johnny Byers "Something big will happen that no one will even be ready for.  It's just part of the equation operating a big city like this."

A few weeks or maybe a month after my prediction I was in a grocery store and Johnny phoned me: "Jimmy DiPaola is dead."

It's simply the law of averages  and, quite frankly, I'm surprised that more events of that magnitude didn't occur as a domino effect usually follows.  McGlynn dodged those unseen events, didn't he?  But he eventually left office and this writer does not believe it was by choice.

Do you believe Adam Knight that this blog booted McGlynn?    To quote Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 1 "Anything's possible."  McGlynn purportedly kept all his enemies at bay by cutting deals with them.  Mike just didn't want to cut any deals when it came to the P/E/G access channels:

a)Mike had too much control with being "issuing authority" and wagging Comcast as long as he could - what was it  - allegedly Twelve Grand for the "lighting of the Christmas tree" each year, another - what? $2500.00 for his "golf tournaments."

b)paying Dempsey, Dunphy and Goldsberry from the monies that this journalist believes were probably for the Government channel.  Of course when you are "issuing authority" under PlanA government, and have more power than National Grid at your control (as well as National Grid,) and you are suddenly cast out of Eden, well, that's kind of like Loki being stripped of his purported birthright by Thor.

McGlynn believes that Medford is his birthright.  We are talking about a pathology that is well beyond obsession here. How many people do YOU know who would choose to name a school after a then-living relative?   Chutzpah?  Shameless audacity would be a better description.

Stealing the election from Robert Penta - far more popular than Stephanie Muccini-Burke, was the act of a master manipulator.  This writer watched as McGlynn pulled out all the stops - and my hand on the Bible as a Christian, I really admired and liked City Councilor Stephanie Muccini-Burke.  My appreciation for her work as a city councilor runs deep...I will go on the record right here and THANK Muccini-Burke for her invaluable work as a city councilor.

She simply was NOT mayor material. I will stand by that fact, and her ouster from office was absolutely the most crushing blow - politically - that the powerful McGlynn family ever suffered.

At the inauguration of a new mayor that McGlynn did not want in office, that I believe he has yet to control, there he was lurking in the shadow world with his consigliere ...Mr. M.R. (or Mister Mister, if you prefer, in the cloak and dagger world of Medford politics.)

Note here: Breanna Lungo-Koehn's thanking McGlynn from the stage - but also mentioning how she will do things differently - appeared to me to be a warning to McGlynn.

Was that a shot across the bow at or to McGlynn?   Was she putting Mikey on notice?

I believe so, though a very notable and smart friend of mine that many of you do not know disagrees.

Time will tell how the Lungo-Koehn relationship with McGlynn unfolds.

A WARNING ABOUT MIKE MCGLYNN:

A word of advice from a fellow a bit older than Breanna - distance yourself from McGlynn.  He is much too powerful and much too crafty to play politics with.  He's a year older than me, we went to the same school in Arlington back in the very early 1970s, and you have the advantage if you keep McGlynn as your enemy, not as some kind of colleague or even alleged political friend.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer, but keep as far away from double-dealing McGlynn as you possibly can.

McGlynn eats his own!  What the heck do you think he will do if you, an attorney, open the door and let that swarm of locusts in?

They will devour you.

OK, the warning is now here, in print, for all to read.

Most of the city is rooting for you Breanna, including this writer.

If I am critical of you it is to make you stronger.  I HAVE YOUR BEST INTEREST(S) AT HEART.

When I investigate a little coffee meet and greet with Adam Knight it is to advise you that the choice might not be the best one at the buffet table.

Adam Knight is crazier than I am, and we all know that I'm as clever as I am crazy. Which makes me very, VERY clever.

Mr. Knight?  Not so much.  He has his powerful union friends and without them he's your garden variety jerk.   Knight antagonized you at the city council year after year.  Take some advice from someone older than you: Forgive but NEVER FORGET.

      MCGLYNN'S FLAWS

Now the good news for Breanna.  McGlynn is a highly flawed former mayor.

Not saying he's not dangerous. Let's give that devil his deserved due.  McGlynn is your MOST dangerous political opponent.  Not Jack McGlynn, not Johnny Granara, not the Dello Russo clan, but Michael J. McGlynn.  You see those other individuals aren't as obsessed with you as McGlynn is and McGlynn, in this longtime journalist's estimation, is so obsessed over you having the seat of power any serious judge in the country should be able to offer you injunctive relief against the former mayor.  Seriously.
________________________________
    McGlynn's flaws:

a)he lost his seat of power. How did that happen?

b)McGlynn ruled by horse-trading and control. You certainly know that better than most so be advised, a gambler on a winning streak suddenly finding his back against the wall is...well, you're an attorney, I don't have to spell it out for you.

c)alliances with Paul Camuso, Adam Knight, Frederick N. Dello Russo, Robert A. Maiocco Jr., these individuals did NOT have the city's best interest at heart, nor would a serious player ever consider to indulge them in any project of significance.

These facts - and others - are why McGlynn is out of office.
Looking rough and weather-worn at Chevalier January 5, 2020, Rumley and McGlynn.   Happy New Year? Not for those two.

McGlynn looked old and beaten today. Don't be fooled by the cover of a book.   Yes, Mike McGlynn is weather-worn, but he is still one of the smartest local politicians in the entire country.   McGlynn is the most formidable opponent you face:

---He hates you.  Probably more than he hates me, and that's a LOT of hate

---He's going to kiss up to you like an ex boyfriend of mine who continuously told me that we were in love.  Hello?  I liked the guy but love wasn't in the equation.  Speak for yourself, buddy.   I was honest in the relationship.  You expect the same from McGlynn?   You're much, much smarter than that.

Mike McGlynn was schooled in politics by his father.  McGlynn took to local politics like a duck to water.  But he will stab ANYONE in the back, including his most loyal lieutenants, if it serves his purposes.

Perhaps the Camuso family was richly rewarded for their loyalty, however Paul didn't get what he wanted, what he lusted for...the seat of power that you now control, the corner office.

McGlynn might have been better off with Mr. Camuso in office.  Camuso's wife could keep him in line, her respected father could also be the voice of reason, but - instead - McGlynn's biggest mistake was putting in office the wife of a whackjob clerk of courts who needs a little bit more - allegedly - than Uncle Bill's help.    And because of that error in judgment, McGlynn is on the outside looking in and having to deal...maybe beg is the better word - with an opponent who now holds all the cards.    The thought of McGlynn being disadvantaged delights any person who truly appreciates the beauty of the city of Medford. A beauty obscured by McGlynn's lust for power, his greed, and his failure to serve the public that he promised to nurture.  Shame on Michael J. McGlynn, forever.
If you are at an airport and have a temptation to head to one of the bars, instead have "Bill W." paged, as code for your need for someone from the program come ...

Think of how the police force has a reprieve and doesn't - allegedly - have to watch the city borders to keep some nutcase from getting pulled over by an honest cop! Allegedly, allegedly, allegedly.

#2 Medford Community Cablevision, Inc.

Now I'm going to act like the AG's office and say that my comments on how we are proceeding with the current Determination that the AG hand over MCC TV3 materials will be discussed sometime in the near future as "law enforcement could be impeded."

The ball is now in my court, my darlings.

However, the entire TV3 debacle is the fault of one individual's sloppiness, and that individual is, of course, the issuing authority who took a wrecking ball to P/E/G access in Medford, the aforementioned Mr. McGlynn.

IF this blog was a factor in McGlynn's removal, and the logical mind says that maybe we had some percentage in Humpty Dumpty's fall - perhaps not the 100% Adam Knight attributes to Medford Information Central - we have to go to the Mark Parenteau axiom of "Consider the source" for that.

We do appreciate all readers - those who love us, and those who hate us.

You can file that under: UNITY 2020

Thank you to the late Mark Parenteau, by the way.  When I released a 45 by Lou Reed's drummer back in 1980 Mark said on the airwaves of WBCN that he considered me one of the "Top 10" most knowledgeable people on Lou Reed.

I was honored to be invited to Mr. Reed's wake in 2013, December 16, my God it has been 6 years.    Enjoy every blessed moment of life.  Enjoy every breath that you take.
Life is quicker than a roller coaster ride - now you see it - now you're pushing 70.

There's a new mayor in town, and we are going to be obtaining information on TV3 Medford.

It's Inauguration Night and Life is Good!
