GOVERNOR BILL WELD PROSECUTED CASE OF GERRY CLEMENTE BEFORE BECOMING GOVERNOR

Mr. Weld, who has been nominated by President Reagan to head the criminal division of the Justice Department, said the case was unusual and one of the most serious examples of police corruption in recent American history.  https://www.nytimes.com/1986/07/31/us/officers-in-massachusetts-indicted-in-theft-of-test.html

These disclosures eventually led to Captain Clemente, who had personal ties to both Sergeant Bangs and Lieutenant Doherty. Last spring, in the trial of Mr. Clemente for the burglary, testimony indicated that all three had taken part in the crime and that Captain Clemente, on duty as night shift superviser at the time, had helped to rifle the safe-deposit boxes. He Is Serving Time for Theft

Mr. Clemente was convicted in the burglary and is serving 30 to 40 years for the crime. Mr. Doherty is serving 18 to 20 years for trying to kill Mr. Bangs.

Among the others who benefited from the theft of the police examinations, the indictment said, were Mr. Clemente's brother, Robert W. Clemente, 50, who got copies of the sergeant's test in 1979 and the lieutenant's test in 1983, and Mr. Doherty's son, Michael J. Doherty. The younger Mr. Doherty was said to have been given a copy of the 1983 police entrance examination by his father when he was 18 years old.

In addition to furnishing their friends and relatives with copies of the tests, Mr. Clemente and Mr. Doherty also broke into the office after the testing and altered the answer sheets of some officers, the indictment charged.
