According to documents provided by Rumley, Nunley Benjamin, the head of Medford’s Finance Department is accusing Lungo-Koehn of creating a hostile work environment after the mayor said on a Microsoft Teams call with consultant CLA on June 1 that she would rather “a white male present the budget to the city council instead of [Nunley Benjamin, a Black woman] since they will listen to a white male.”
The document goes on to say the comment was made in front of six other city employees also on the call.
Email from Nunley Benjamin to the mayor on June 1 shows she brought the matter to Lungo-Koehn's attention, letting her know that she was "personally offended by your comment that they (city council) want to hear from a 'white male.' Especially after the city declaring systemic racism. I'm sure you can somewhat understand how I feel as a female. I am also a black female in a predominantly white profession and have worked extremely hard in gaining respect from my peers, constituents, councilors and alike. I hope in the future you would reconsider not stating something like that during a public meeting. Thank you."
