Night and weekend work for the coming week is expected to continue in a similar fashion to what transpired during the past week. To view our most recent progress photos, click here.

 

While the work hours may be sporadic at times, notable night work activities planned for the coming week (6/24 – 6/30) include:

 

• In the Brickbottom Condominium area off Fitchburg Street in Somerville, wall panel placement will proceed around-the-clock. This work will primarily focus on the viaduct walls along the GLX Union Branch and Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line. Residents should expect the use of heavy machinery and engine noise.

 

• On the entire east/north side of the Medford Branch (from Monsignor O’Brien Highway to Medford/Tufts Station), wall panel placement work will continue at night on a sporadic basis over the next few weeks. In addition to wall work, the fitting out of the Overhead Catenary Poles will continue. Residents should expect the intermittent use of heavy machinery and engine noise.

 

• In addition to wall panel placement, signal and electrical work is expected in and around the station areas at night. This work is usually quieter than wall panel placement as it does not generally require the use of heavy machinery.

 

In order to complete the work quickly and efficiently, hi-rail vehicles (trucks and heavy equipment modified to operate on rails) will be in use along both branches.  In addition, the yellow construction train known as the Multi-Purpose Machine (MPM) will be used at night within work zones along the entire Medford Branch. These vehicles are required by federal regulations to sound their horns during frequent stops and starts.
