NEIGHBORHOOD REPORT: NEW YORK UP CLOSE
NEIGHBORHOOD
REPORT:
NEW YORK
UP CLOSE;
They'd Rather
Beat Yankees,
But They're Still Proud https://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/11/nyregion/neighborhood-report-new-york-up-close-they-d-rather-beat-yankees-but-they-re.html
New York and Medford both take
their politics seriously, however,
and Medford, which tends to vote Democratic,
is not easily swayed.
Patricia Brady Doherty, a former city councilwoman,
said of Mr. Bloomberg's multimillion-dollar campaign: '
'Michael would have had just as hard a time
getting elected here.''
Still, there is pride.
Ms. Doherty said her father,
''a yellow dog Democrat,''
enjoyed seeing a Medford
man win in New York.
Mayor Michael McGlynn, who just won his eighth election (no term limits here), usually warns political neophytes that they won't get rich in public service. But to Mr. Bloomberg, he sent a letter asking for a contribution to Medford's public schools. Mayor McGlynn hasn't heard back yet, but he expects to eventually.
