Why Columbus renaming committee members are calling the process 'flawed'
Controversy continues to dog the Advisory Committee to Rename the Columbus School with arguments about the process dominating a meeting June 1.
“My feeling is the process is flawed,” member Ron Giovino said. “I did not feel any collaboration,” in reference to allegations his presentation on the late Jean Barry-Sutherland, once the school’s principal and one of the three names chosen as final submissions to the School Committee, being edited without his permission or input.
Other members, including Ken Mallon and Maria Rocha, countered Giovino had stopped communicating.
The other two final names are Belinda Sutton, an enslaved woman at the Royall House, and Missituk, the Native American name for the Mystic River.
In a single vote by the committee May 27, Sutton received 12 votes, Barry-Sutherland 7 and Missituk 2.
