Message from the Mayor

Dear Readers,

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday weekend with family and friends.

As we kick off July, we are already getting to work on our Fiscal Year 2022 goals and priorities, and we're continuing the progress we made in FY21.

Last week, the City Council approved my (amended) FY22 budget by a 5-2 vote, following a unanimous 7-0 approval of the Schools budget by the Medford School Committee. This budget makes a substantial investment in our schools, infrastructure, and emergency services and allows us to provide residents with the resources and services that they need.

Looking ahead to the next few weeks and months, we'll be working to implement some new initiatives, such as bringing parking enforcement in-house, conducting preventive maintenance at our municipal facilities, and continuing our advocacy for Charter Review.

Over the next few months you'll also start to see some tangible progress made at many of our parks, including Barry, Capen, Cummings, Tufts, and Playstead. We will have more updates on that work very soon, so stay tuned!

Projects + Planning

Residential Shared Streets Program Returning for Summer/Fall 2021!

Medford’s residential Shared Streets program is returning for summer/fall 2021, by resident request.

To request that your street (side streets only, no main roads) be considered, you can nominate your street at https://bit.ly/medford-shared-streets21Nominated streets should show strong support from people who live on and around the street. Nominations for round one are open through July 21st.

Shared streets are temporary interventions with cones and signage to give people more space to get around in their neighborhoods car-free and safely. Local traffic, deliveries, and emergency vehicles will still have access to the street, but these interventions look to discourage cut through-traffic and prioritize the safe use of streets for pedestrians and bicyclists. Shared streets are a great way to maintain social distancing and stay safe during COVID-19 and beyond while enjoying the outdoors.
