Why New Candidates Usually Fail to Break Through in Medford

An Essay by Joe V.

We see it time after time, year after year, new names and faces sign up to be candidates for school committee and city council, yet the stagnation has set in. Oh a Paul Ruseau might break through, a Mike Ruggiero picks up on Tony D'Anthony D'Antonio Charter Review/Charter Change idea and they can knock out a Bob Skerry, but that's few and far between. And when a Bill O'Keefe, Esq. becomes a school committee member and upsets the apple cart he becomes a target. Does anyone even remember that Attorney Anthony Arena's son was briefly on the city council. Why didn't he run again and again and again and be persistent? He had the platform...and though he did very little, it was better than Caraviello, Knight, Scarpelli and Dello Russo, wasn't it? The joke in Medford was that Arena echoed his father on the council - I did a parody of Thanksgiving dinner at the Arena household with Anthony the father speaking and the son repeating every word out of daddy's mouth. It WAS funny as a parody, not very funny that our city council probably ran that way... Would I like to see more than just two new faces on the city council? Of course we all would. Is it going to happen? Well, look at how hard I am working just to help out the community and see if any candidate matches my energy. They simply do not. Some try, some are making some noise, but, really people, there are more voters that know my name than the names of the people actually running. And that, my friends, is why Medford is stuck in neutral. http://masscases.com/cases/land/2018/2018-16-000364-MEMO%20&%20ORDER.html
