Medford Prevention and Outreach Manager Wins 2023 Community Champion Award

Penelope Funaiole, Manager of Medford’s Office of Prevention and Outreach, Earns Prestigious Award from the Children’s Trust Family Support Network

(MEDFORD) — Medford’s Office of Prevention and Outreach Manager, Penelope Funaiole, was awarded the Children’s Trust Family Support Network 2023 Community Champion Award. The award was presented to Funaiole during the organization’s annual Celebration Day on June 15 at a ceremony via Zoom.

The award recognizes Funaiole for her work as a family support professional, specifically her work with the Medford Family Network (MFN). She was nominated for the award by the MFN for her initiatives and vision to help strengthen the organization and its programming.

“Our Office of Prevention and Outreach, led by Penny, is an amazing community resource and the amount of work they are able to accomplish is astounding,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “This award is well-deserved, as the effects of the projects Penny and her team execute can be felt throughout our community – they truly make this a better place.”

"I am honored to be recognized by the Children’s Trust and grateful to be nominated by Marie Cassidy of the Medford Family Network,” said Funaiole. “My team in the Office of Prevention and Outreach makes this work possible and we are excited to continuously improve the future of social justice and equity in Medford.”

Funaiole’s work with the Medford Family Network includes procuring a Program Mapping Project grant that supports engagement efforts through the examination of the MFN’s current practices, creating short- and long-term plans to enhance outreach strategies to reach a broader, more diverse audience. She has also made Medford’s Community Liaisons available to the MFN for parent education programs, playgroup activities, and individual consultations with families. The Children’s Trust funds the MFN, along with the State.

Marie Cassidy, Director of the Medford Family Network, nominated Funaiole for the award and specifically commended her for her support.

“She created a position for herself as a liaison among agencies and organizations, with a prime focus on the Public Schools and City Hall,” Cassidy wrote. “She is the epitome of being a partner, willing to share resources and data to best inform our program and service planning.”
