The School Committee voted to reverse a decision it made two months ago to have Superintendent of Schools Roy Belson retire on April 30.
Superintendent of Schools Roy Belson will continue to serve as superintendent through the end of the fiscal year, the School Committee decided at a special Committee of the Whole on April 26.
The School Committee had voted in February for him to retire on April 30 following a controversy over his failure to report a gun magazine that had been discovered in a school. Now that the Committee has received the report from the Medford Police investigation into the controversy, and given the lack of a succession plan prior to the hiring of a new superintendent, the majority of the Committee felt that the school system would be better served with Belson still on board full-time.

Mayor Stephanie M. Burke, Vice Chair Mea Quinn Mustone, Secretary Kathy Kreatz and School Committee member Paul Ruseau all voted in favor of keeping Belson full-time until June 30. School Committee members Michael Ruggiero and Erin DiBenedetto voted against the decision.

“I believe firmly that it’s in the best interest of the school system now, facing budgets ... and other end-of-year tasks that Belson continue in his position and we make the transition to a new superintendent on July 1,” said Van der Kloot, who made the initial motion.
