Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, immigration status, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation, HOWEVER it is requisite that one of the 50 or so Mayors in Massachusetts impregnate you to be considered, even if you are a guy.

REQUIRED PROOF OF IMPREGNATION BY A CITY OFFICIAL FOR YOU TO BE CONSIDERED AS A BOARD MEMBER.


Boards + Commissions Seeking Applicants

The City of Medford is currently accepting applications from Medford residents to serve on several Boards and Commissions.

Residents who are interested should complete the Board and Commission Interest Form available at www.medfordma.org/boards. Completed forms should be submitted via email to, BoardsandCommissions@medford-ma.gov or mailed to the Office of the Mayor at 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Room 202, Medford, MA 02155.

Residents of all backgrounds and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Medford city services are available to all residents, regardless of economic situation, race, gender, ability, benefit eligibility, or religious affiliation.  

There are currently vacancies on the following boards and commissions:

Bicycle Advisory Commission (3 vacancies)

Residents of all experience are welcome to apply. Current and past members have included residents with backgrounds in transportation and urban planning, software engineering, marketing and communications, and journalism, but specific skills are not required. The Commission normally meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9pm.

Board of Registrars of Voters (2 vacancies – Registered Republicans)

The Board of Registrars of Voters is currently seeking to fill two vacancies. The vacant positions must be filled by Medford residents who are registered Republicans. The Board consists of three members who serve three-year terms, plus the City Clerk.

Civic Auditorium and Convention Center Commission (2 vacancies)

Commissioners attend monthly commission meetings, help plan and monitor capital improvement projects relative to civic auditoriums and oversee contracts with the Chevalier Theater’s management company.

Commissioner of Trust Funds (3 vacancies)

Commissioners serve three-year terms, and appointment is subject to approval by the City Council.

Community Garden Commission (2 vacancies)

The Commission works with the City and others to enhance the quality of urban life and build community bonds by creating and sustaining a gardening network that promotes the benefits of “green” and sustainable gardening practices. The Commission was established to organize, coordinate, set policies, and provide oversight for new community gardens in Medford. The Commission is made up of six members and two alternates. Meetings are typically held on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 7 to 8:30pm.

Council on Aging (1 vacancy)

The general mandate of the Medford Council on Aging is to be the primary advocate for Medford’s older adults. To that end, the Council evaluates, promotes, encourages and provides new and existing services that are intended to enhance the quality of the lives of elder residents.

Human Rights Commission (3 vacancies)

The mission of the Human Rights Commission is to protect the civil rights of Medford residents, reinforce a positive community atmosphere, work with community groups and agencies to educate, promote understanding to eliminate prejudice and intolerance, and to mediate within the community whenever needed. The Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August) at 5:30pm.

Library Board of Trustees (1 vacancy)

The Board of Library Trustees oversees library operations and finances, advocates for the library, and works with staff and administration to support and improve library services.  The Board meets monthly.

License Commission (1 vacancy)

The License Commission is charged with the responsibility of issuing various types of alcohol licenses including Package Store Licenses, Restaurant Licenses, Club Licenses, One-Day Licenses, and Entertainment Licenses. Appointment to the License Commission is subject to City Council approval.

Medford Housing Authority (1 vacancy)

The City is seeking to appoint one Medford resident to a position on the Medford Housing Authority’s Board of Directors. Applicants must be residents of an MHA-managed building. Though the City does not oversee the MHA or its buildings, by statute, the Mayor appoints one resident member to the Board of Directors.

Water and Sewer Commission (1 vacancy)

Commissioners serve three-year terms.

Zoning Board of Appeals (2 vacancies)

The Medford Zoning Board of Appeals is a statutory board created to hear appeals of denials of building permit and zoning enforcement requests to determine if a variance is allowed and appropriate under Massachusetts General Law c. 40A (The Massachusetts Zoning Act). The Board additionally serves as the Special Permit Granting Authority where required by local ordinance and regulation. The Zoning Appeals meets monthly or as required.
