Former Medford High School teacher Mark Smith lost his teaching license last year after allegations surfaced he sexually abused a former female student.

Records show Smith also lied on his renewal application in 1999 claiming he was never convicted of any crimes, even though he pleaded guilty to assault and battery in 1983.

"No, thank you," said Smith.

“What we heard tonight, we didn’t feel was a lot of transparency,” said MHS parent Bob Candee, who asked why the district did not send a letter home with students about the incident. “You have a public relations director — a rather expensive one. With that in mind, why weren’t you using her services? Why aren’t we hearing about that tonight?”

School Committee member Erin DiBenedetto said the district’s delay in communicating about the threat created a sense of doubt among parents.

Medford High School locked down after bomb scare

City officials were scrambling early this morning following an anonymous call to State Police, claiming a bomb would be going off at Medford and Peabody high schools.

“Ten years ago we wouldn’t even be here,” said MPD Spokesman Lt. Paul Covino, while keeping an eye on the school’s entrance.

Covino said since the upsurge in school gun violence that started with the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, any threats are taken very seriously.

Officials said this was considered a low-level threat because the individual who called in the bomb scare did not mention a motive, time or specific location for the proposed attack.

“We’ve had a couple of different threats like this in the past couple of years,” Covino said.

In February 2014, Riccio filed a suit against Greater Lawrence Tech and Superintendent John Lavoie, citing wrongful terminations and alleging the school, district, and superintendent committed a variety of state and federal violations when she was terminated.

Last week, the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of Greater Lawrence Tech in a summary judgment, dismissing all claims made by Riccio.

Riccio, 43, of Salisbury, lost her job as director of careers and technical education at Greater Lawrence Technical School after an internal investigation found that a press release issued by the school falsely identified her as the recipient of a national teacher's award. Riccio was never named “Educator of the Year” by the nonprofit Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, a Chelsea High School teacher actually received the award.

Federal Court throws out wrongful termination suit

Riccio's case closed last week, when Federal District Court Judge George O'Toole effectively dismissed Riccio's claims, including one for breach of contract in her termination with a summary judgment in favor of Greater Lawrence Tech on all claims.

The Eagle-Tribune reported in 2013 that Roy Belson, superintendent of Medford Public Schools, said the press release was a result of miscommunication and would not have acted as Greater Lawrence Tech did.

He (Roy Belson) maintained Riccio was the most qualified applicant for the position.
