Parents and School Committee members said the district should have informed parents about the incident as soon as possible.
“What
we heard tonight, we didn’t feel was a lot of transparency,” said MHS
parent Bob Candee, who asked why the district did not send a letter home
with students about the incident. “You have a public relations director
— a rather expensive one. With that in mind, why weren’t you using her
services? Why aren’t we hearing about that tonight?”
School
Committee member Erin DiBenedetto said the district’s delay in
communicating about the threat created a sense of doubt among parents.
“The reason people are upset is because when they don’t know what’s going on, their fear and anxiety rises,” she said. “If we communicate in an effective way with all members of the community, that fear goes away.”

Medford High School locked down after bomb scare
- City officials were scrambling early this morning following an anonymous call to State Police, claiming a bomb would be going off at Medford and Peabody high schools.
“Ten years ago we wouldn’t even be here,” said MPD Spokesman Lt. Paul Covino, while keeping an eye on the school’s entrance.
Covino said since the upsurge in school gun violence that started with the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, any threats are taken very seriously.
Officials said this was considered a low-level threat because the individual who called in the bomb scare did not mention a motive, time or specific location for the proposed attack.
“We’ve had a couple of different threats like this in the past couple of years,” Covino said.
