General Laws
Section 3. Except as provided by section five, public shade trees shall not be cut, trimmed or removed, in whole or in part, by any person other than the tree warden or his deputy, even if he be the owner of the fee in the land on which such tree is situated, except upon a permit in writing from said tree warden, nor shall they be cut down or removed by the tree warden or his deputy or other person without a public hearing and said tree warden or his deputy shall cause a notice of the time and place of such hearing thereof, which shall identify the size, type and location of the shade tree or trees to be cut down or removed, to be posted in two or more public places in the town and upon the tree at least seven days before such hearing and published in a newspaper of general circulation in the city or town once in each of two successive weeks, the first publication to be not less than seven days before the day of the hearing or if no such local newspaper exists

Mission
The City of Medford is a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation. We meet criteria each year to keep this status.The City is dedicated in their tree planting program and plants over 100 trees each year (when appropriations are available).
Usually under the supervision of a Tree Warden, the Forestry Division maintains all public shade trees in the City of Medford.
Shade trees are governed under MGL Chp. 87 Section 3 and cannot be removed unless the Tree Warden or Deputy deems the tree unhealthy and/or dead or approved through a Public Hearing. Public Hearings are requested, in writing, to the Tree Warden.
Forestry personnel, directed by the Commissioner of Public Works manages on a daily basis trimming (pruning) of right-of-way trees, removal of dead or diseased trees and stump removal. At times they will be called upon to deal with trees infested with insects and areas with poison ivy. The Tree Warden also oversees a private contractor to assist with the City crew in maintaining public shade trees.
During wind-storm emergencies, crews will work in dangerous situations in the interest of public safety. Clean up after windstorms sometimes takes up to a week, during these times the City will go around and collect the fallen limbs. Anything put out after that will be collected on Yard Waste weeks.
Reminder: Branches for yard waste collection must be in 3” long, 3” diameter and tied in bundles.
