Katherine Clark eyes U.S. House leadership post; Jeffries the top Dem job Brooklyn rep also says he’s running for same post

U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark waited at least until a new day dawned to toss her hat into the House Democratic leadership ring.

The 5th District congresswoman, now the assistant speaker, announced this morning she’s running for the number 2 spot — since the Republicans are the majority and Kevin McCarthy will be the Speaker.

Fellow Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) formally announced he’s running today for Pelosi’s top spot in the party while Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) is also said to be mulling a run.

Jeffries, from Brooklyn, said in his announcement a “top priority” is winning back the House from Republicans in 2024, ABC News reports. Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, took herself out of the running today, the AP is reporting.

Clark, 59, of Revere, said in a letter to House colleagues: “By standing with women, for democracy, and for everyone’s economic security, we have defied expectations and secured a historically close margin in the House. Now, we must be tough, agile, and united to stop the Republican House Majority’s dangerous agenda and take back the House.”

She added: “I am ready to guide this critical work as our next Democratic Whip, and I ask for your support.”
