State rep. looks to take back VFW land for city
The Fire Department initially expressed a preference for the space behind the VFW to house the new training facility, but the entire VFW property is owned by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. According to Donato, MassDOT has not used the space since the 1950s, instead leasing it to the VFW.
But earlier this year, the state agency announced its intention to use that area for salt and sand storage and said it would not permit the city to build a firefighter training facility there. The decision would also impact the VFW, which uses the back area of the site for events.
“I’m skeptical that the Department of Transportation knew that that land was there and had their sites set on it ... until I brought it up,” Donato said.
Donato now feels that recovering the land from the state agency could help both the VFW and the firefighters, as the front of the property could be used for the training facility and the VFW could continue to use the back area. MassDOT could not be reached for comment regarding this issue.
