Robert, with anything it seems there is a silver lining to the alleged dark side. There is more to the Mohegan Sun than gambling.  There are terrific music, comedy and other types of concerts which are self-sustaining, bringing in revenue for the artists, the venue and the surrounding community.  Suffolk Downs brought the Beatles to town in 1966.  There are responsible people who like entertainment who gamble for fun. Since the casino licenses are a reality, the most logical adjustment is to mobilize Gambler's Anonymous, combine the program with AA, NA, Al-anon and become a powerful force - a sort of antidote - to those with little self-control that need help combating drug abuse, alcohol abuse, gambling abuse.  Educating the public to the enormous odds against a gambler and that the house always wins would better arm those on the other side of the issue.  The shopping malls, entertainment and other valuable revenue-creating streams that come along with a casino can improve the area where a casino lands. With all the lottery tickets irresponsible "gamblers" throw on every street in the Commonwealth, The Lottery seems poised to lose the most.  Maybe a casino will make our streets cleaner. You bring up valid points, but there are two sides to the issue, and education in regards to people who spend monies they don't have on Keno and bundles of scratch tickets is going to prove to be more helpful in the long run.  A casino is inevitable, and Suffolk Downs with accessible buses and trains is more appealing than the mess it will make in Everett with less infrastructure to support it.   Creating systems to help gambling addicts and nipping the problem in the bud as much as possible is going to be more effective than fighting the casino lobby.
