Medford lowers tax rates for sixth year in a row

“You’ve got to look at the city as a whole and you can’t go shifting it so much that it’s burdening owner-occupied residents,” Councilor Breanna Lungo-Koehn told the Transcript.

Lungo-Koehn requested that the council delay the vote on the tax rate and the residential exemption until councilors meet with Mayor Stephanie M. Burke to discuss a capital plan for public safety needs in the city. Lungo-Koehn said she does not want to raise taxes for residents until the city addresses the conditions of the city’s fire stations, which firefighters and councilors say are hazardous, unsanitary and uncomfortable for firefighters.

The council was supposed to meet with Burke earlier in the evening on Dec. 11, but Burke cancelled the meeting, Lugno-Koehn said. It has been rescheduled for Dec. 18.
