Fallout from the Cuban Missile Crisis as well as the angry politicians of the day a huge red flag. It is still astounding that any president wouldn't be fully insulated from outside threats.  This segment of our history has found itself studied and looked at from a number of angles for the past five decades. It only takes a handful of crackpots, which is why anyone in a position of power (president, pope, high profile people with influence) needs to stay protected. An ounce of healthy paranoia is worth a pound of cure...or something like that.
